Ash Flanders talks about his show ASH FLANDERS IS NOTHING

Ash Flanders is nothing is more than just a show.

It’s introspection. This is critical. It’s satire. That’s all, and it’s nothing. And he’s coming to Brunswick Ballroom for just two shows in July. A trip back in time to the days of COVID, the show is sure to make you laugh – and maybe even cry.

Ash Flanders is a multi-award winning writer and performer. His solo work includes End of, Play to win, Ash Flanders is nothing, Special victim, same girls and Negative Energy Inc. all done with his longtime collaborator Stephen Nicolazzo. He and Declan Greene set up theater under the Sisters Grimm name with Ash also performing in Little Mercy (STC), The Sovereign Wife (MTC Neon), Calpurnia Descendant (Malthouse Theater / STC), Lilith: the jungle girl (MTC) and an adaptation of Verdi La Traviata (Belvoir). As an actor he was seen in the solo exhibition Buyer & Cellar (CTM), Blackie Blackie Brown (Malting / STC), Adena Jacobs’ Hedda (Belvoir), The temple (Malthouse / Pan Pan Theater), The golden dragon (MTC) and Psycho Beach Party (Théâtre des Petits).

Are you excited to return to the Brunswick Ballroom?

Ash: Please, after the year we have had in Melbourne, I am delighted to come back anywhere. But, yes, I am particularly excited to return to Brunswick Ballroom. Attending (read: FLY) their opening gala was a real joy. This staircase was designed for large entryways and also means I’m easier to spot when people are inevitably throwing lettuce. Even my mom can get one this time!

Can you tell me a bit about your writing process Ash Flanders is nothing?

Ash: You know how an oyster can turn an itchy lump of sand into a pearl? This is what writing allows me to do with my life. I take all the irritants (my family, my partner, death) and turn them into beautiful, fun, shiny things that go well with any outfit.

What’s the hardest part of writing a cabaret?

Ash: Decide when is the best time to bravely take off your sequined blazer.

And the most exciting?

Ash: Buy the blazer.

What can the public expect Ash Flanders is nothing?

Ash: First, they can expect an artist who has missed them terribly. It’s the longest I’ve lived without all of you – and you are my longest relationship! As for the series itself, it’s a very silly look at some very serious stuff. Last year has been pretty wild personally, so this is probably my funniest, saddest show yet – and boy, does that say anything. I created and reworked the script for over a year, making sureI don’t waste a second of our precious time together and honestly can’t wait to share it with you for – WHAT? !!? TWO NIGHTS ONLY!?!? WHAT A TERRIBLE BUSINESS MODEL! GET MY AGENT ON THE PHONE NOW !!!!!!!

Ash Flanders is nothing plays July 1 and 8 at the Brunswick Ballroom, Melbourne.
