Google wants to start the year off right by working early on its next-gen Pixel phone. Nothing is official yet, but the tech giant has reportedly filed a patent for a new flagship product following on from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Current models have become a hot topic lately due to several issues. We hope that no new issues or issues will surface. It’s never too early to imagine future phones, especially if they come from big brands like Google.
People will always be interested in the Pixel line because it comes from Google. Pixel phones don’t always come in perfect, with all the issues that come along, but they do tell us what to expect from other OEMs. Since the current Pixel runs on the latest version of the Android operating system, we’re getting advice on what other phones might have.
After the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro, there will be a Pixel 6a. It will be a more affordable variant. A few months later, there will be the Pixel 7. At this point, it’s not clear if it will still come with a Pro variant.
Over the years, Google has released Pixel phones with innovative features and designs. The latest series has arrived with a new camera design. The next one may come with an under-screen camera depending on one source. This means that there will no longer be a hole punch cutout for the selfie camera.
This is not really revolutionary as others have already introduced phones with such under-screen cameras. It will be just the first for Google. A related patent has been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The device is labeled as “Display configuration for mobile computing devices”. The patent was filed on August 31, 2021 and was published on December 16, 2021.
The file indicates to us the need for a larger screen surface but without having to increase the size of the device. This requires the selfie camera to be below, hence the idea of an under panel camera.
Before Google, we saw other phones with this technology. We remember the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 and the ZTE Axon 30. It’s time for the tech giant to come up with something on its own and implement this cutting edge technology. You can’t say it’s not really that important as it can compromise the picture quality, but there have been improvements since the ZTE Axon 30.
A similar patent surfaced before, but this one featured a subscreen and prism. The new design is seen as more cost effective. There is no confirmation but it appears to be an emissive display. The camera part is non-emissive, so light can reach the camera.
The position of the selfie is at the top right of the screen. There may be one or more camera sensors under the OLED screen. With more light entering, the expecation is that the picture will be better. At the moment there is no mention of Face Unlock but that shouldn’t be a problem.
