Recognizes innovative women in dentistry

YORK, Pennsylvania: Dentsply Sirona recently presented the second edition of its Smart Integration Award to women in dentistry at a virtual awards ceremony. With the launch of the award in 2019, Dentsply Sirona recognizes visionary treatment concepts and outstanding achievements of women in dentistry around the world while creating a network of women in dentistry. This year, applicants came from almost 40 countries.

Dentists and dental technicians from around the world submitted their ideas for integrating digital technologies into the dental laboratories and practices of the future and improving the treatment experience for patients. Ninety nominees attended the awards ceremony. An international jury made up of Dentsply Sirona executives and renowned external experts selected them. Winners were awarded in five categories: “Digital clinical workflow”, “Digital patient communication”, “Innovative infection control and prevention”, “Dental equipment management” and “Smart lab-dentist cooperation” .

The innovation categories in digital dentistry have been expanded this year due to the great global interest. The pool of applicants was also larger: dentists and dental technicians in the United States were also able to apply for the first time. Dentsply Sirona wanted to do justice to the growing proportion of women in dental professions, promote their skills and enhance their career opportunities with the Smart Integration Award,

This year’s Smart Integration Award winners are Dr Shivi Gupta from San Diego, USA, and Christine Trautmann from Darmstadt, Germany. Gupta won the award in the “Digital Patient Communication” category. In three exemplary case descriptions, the CAD / CAM expert demonstrated how she achieves high aesthetic and functional treatment success in her practice using a fully digital workflow. It also allows it to provide patients with a comfortable and efficient treatment experience and precise results.

Christine Trautmann convinced the jury in the “Smart Lab-Dentist Cooperation” category by presenting a fully digitized ordering process between dentist and laboratory.

“End-to-end digitized workflows are still a vision in this area – but very desirable,” Trautmann said in the interview. “This is because they facilitate communication between the two parties equally and give dental technicians the opportunity to respond even better to individual restorative requirements.”

Dr Terri Dolan, Vice President and Clinical Director of Dentsply Sirona, sees great potential in the Smart Integration Award: “The strong interest of women around the world shows us how important awards like this are. They recognize achievement and build professional confidence, helping us promote gender parity in dentistry to support the next generation of female leaders. Dolan, herself a dentist, is the Key Opinion Leader Network Development Program Manager at Dentsply Sirona.

Professor Ihsane Ben Yahya, President of the FDI World Dental Federation, attended the awards ceremony as the guest of honor. She is also convinced that initiatives such as the Smart Integration Award would increase the influence of women in dentistry. She said she was convinced that the winners of the night before were the leaders of tomorrow. She added that the women gathered here would help pave the way for empowering patients around the world with innovative solutions and ideas that could revolutionize their industry. Supporting and empowering women in dentistry is the common goal of FDI and Dentsply Sirona.

Beyond the Smart Integration Award, Dentsply Sirona is fully committed to equal opportunities, equal rights and sustainability. Various initiatives for women support their development in the dental professions and make their achievements visible. One of them is “First to 50”, a global program to promote women as speakers. It aims to put women in contact with professional coaches to support their professional development and enable them to become speakers. Other measures concern the improvement of networking and experience sharing opportunities at round tables and conferences.

Dentsply Sirona has launched Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) – interest groups to promote equity, diversity and inclusion, to achieve inclusion and equal opportunity for all employees within the company. These include the “DS Women” initiative. The goal of DS Women is to promote more women to leadership positions at Dentsply Sirona.

In its recent new sustainability strategy, Dentsply Sirona is also clearly committed to equity. Among other things, the company defines achieving gender parity and equal pay for men and women by 2025 as an important step on the road to a “brighter world”.

For Dentsply Sirona, the “Healthy Company” strategic pillar includes having fifty percent of its board members by gender and ethnically mixed and 60 percent of its board committees chaired by women.
