The gap year is the road trip of a lifetime

Pack your bags because it’s time for castles, coffee and craic as three women in their sixties embark on the adventure of a lifetime in The Gap Year, a lyric theater production in association with Commedia of Errors at the Lyric Theater Sat 3 – Sun 25 Sep 2022 .

New widow Kate (Carol Moore), head nanny Roisin (Libby Smyth) and their best friend Oonagh (Marion O’Dwyer) have decided enough is enough. Life is too short, they will follow in their children’s footsteps and take a year off. Thailand? Europe? Downstairs ? No, they visit every county in Ireland, of course there are a few they’ve never even heard of!

Written by Carrickfergus playwright Clare McMahon and directed by Benjamin Gould, The Gap Year was first commissioned in 2019 and developed by the Lyric New Writing department. It is part of Lyric’s focus on innovative new works, world-class talent and live theater and part of a dynamic new season.

Jimmy Fay, Executive Producer, Lyric Theatre, said, “New writing is the lifeblood of Lyric Theatre, and we are proud to premiere several new plays this season, beginning with Clare McMahon’s The Gap Year. Featuring a stunning ensemble including Carol Moore, Marion O’Dwyer and Libby Smyth, audiences will be taken on a journey with these amazing women who prove you’re never too old to start a new adventure. Clare’s writing is wonderfully sensitive to the nuances of relationships, friendships and flirtation. She finds a lot of humor throughout her play. Clare is a brilliant new voice and the Lyric is proud to present this bold and ambitious piece.

Benjamin Gould, Director and Artistic Director of Commedia of Errors added:
“I am thrilled to lead ‘The Gap Year’ for opera audiences and for our company to continue to build our relationship with opera theatre. We have gone from strength to strength since we presented our sold-out play ‘Shakespeare’s Women ‘ here in 2017. Written by co-creator Clare McMahon, ‘The Gap Year’ will be the first main scene of Commedia of Errors. We hope audiences enjoy this heartfelt piece about new beginnings and adventure.”

Damian Smyth, Head of Literature, Arts Council Northern Ireland, said: “The Arts Council Northern Ireland is committed to providing opportunities for the development of new writing by emerging artists. The Gap Year was developed as part of Lyric’s New Playwrights program, an initiative that offers emerging writers the opportunity to receive dedicated, tailored mentorship support over a six-month period to create and pitch new work. We are thrilled to support this dynamic production by playwright Clare McMahon and Commedia of Errors, and I encourage everyone to follow, enjoy and support your local theatre.
