The production of Hairspray at the Cheltenham Everyman Theater was canceled after cast members tested positive for Covid

People with tickets to see the production of Hairspray at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theater last night were disappointed as the show was canceled due to a positive Covid test among the cast.

A question mark hung over tonight’s (January 19) performance after two more positive tests, but the team managed to bring in stunt doubles and actors who have previously appeared on the show to cover for the missing actors.

One of the stunt doubles tested positive first, followed by lead actor Richard Meek, who played the role of Corny Collins.

Digital Marketing Director Sam Bartlett said: “Currently we are bringing in actors who have been in Hairspray before to cover the roles and we should continue tonight.

“Since the first two positive test results, we have had a few more, but those roles can be filled with the stunt doubles.

“From now on, we expect the show to go as planned, provided we have no more positive lateral flow tests.”

In a Facebook post to the Cheltenham Noticeboard site today, concerned ticket holder Richard Stokes asked if tonight’s performance was likely to go ahead, following the cancellation of yesterday’s show.

The hit musical returned to Everyman after breaking box office records in the West End, on Broadway and on the big screen since 1988.

It tells the story of big-haired Tracy Turnblad who has big dreams of dancing to stardom and into the heart of teen idol Link Larkin.

Production is taking place in Cheltenham until Saturday June 29.
