Parish of Calcasieu, La. – As Hurricane Laura approaches – and because a hurricane warning is now in effect for the parish of Calcasieu and evacuations are taking place – we implore you never keep dogs tethered or herded outside and always bring pets with you if you need to evacuate.
Believe it or not, whenever there is a natural disaster, many dogs and other pets are left out to fend for themselves and even left behind when humans evacuate. Tied dogs will swim to exhaustion and drown – and there are tethered dogs everywhere. PETA’s animal rescue team witnessed first-hand the trauma the animals endure when left behind in the face of floodwater and flying debris. In previous storms, we found dead dogs. We have also found them in water up to their necks, unable to sit or lie down, and in crates almost submerged inside houses. and saw animals that were thrown by strong winds. And of course the animals are petrified in this kind of weather condition.
